Alma Real Estate

The town of Alma named after a local storekeeper's daugher was established in 1873 at the junction of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River and Buckskin Creek, a location essential to it's success. Alma was lower in elevation than such other nearby mining towns, yet close enough to the mines to attract the construction of smelters. Alma's post office opened in 1873, and by 1874, the town had grown to 700 residents.

One of the most notable events that happened in Alma was the day someone drove a flock of sheep into nearby Bucksin Joe. One of them came down with small pox and dyed shortly thereafter. The virus spread throughout the whole town, but one resident, a dancehall girl named Silverheels, helped nurse many of the sick back to health when no one else would. She too came down with the virus toward the end of the epidemic and the towns folk took a collection of money to help her out. When they went to her house to give it to her, she had fled never to be seen again. A nearby mountain is named Mt Silverheels in her honor. It is rumored that many years later a heavily veiled woman was seen walking among the graves but before anyone could get to her she had vanished.

Today, Alma remains a small town with a yesteryear feel with friendly locals and activities for everyone. Hiking the three fourteen thousand peaks, gold medal fishing the lakes, streams and reservoirs, camping, hiking, mountain biking, skiing the nearby ski areas, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing are just a few of the activities to enjoy.
